How to Care for Your Fine Jewelry
A guide to keeping your Dolce Amore Vault pieces at their best.
Everyday Care
A few simple habits will keep your jewelry looking beautiful for years.
Take your jewelry off before your daily rituals. Shower, bath, washing your face. Lotions, perfume, hair products, sunscreen, and makeup can dull the sparkle, discolor, and permanently stain fine jewelry. Harsh chemicals affect gold over time, and we strongly recommend removing your pieces before applying any of these products.
Leave your jewelry at home before any strenuous activity. The gym, yoga, rock climbing, heavy lifting, cycling, anything that puts pressure on your hands can bend and damage rings over time. It can also cause serious injury to your finger. If you have a charm ring, these activities risk the heart detaching from the band entirely.
Swimming pools, the beach, and the ocean are not jewelry friendly. Fingers shrink in cold water and rings can slip off without you noticing. Chlorine can corrode and distort metal, and sand scratches gold.
Do not wear your jewelry to bed, especially rings. Fingers tend to swell overnight and charm rings, prong settings, and clip-on charms can catch on sheets, blankets, and clothing.
In the kitchen, reserve a small ring dish near the sink and stove. Common ingredients like oil and flour can get underneath rings, and kitchen gloves can pull on heart charms. When washing dishes, wet and soapy hands are a common cause of rings slipping off.
Extra Care for Charm Rings and Clip-On Charms
Our charm rings and clip-on charms are some of our most beloved pieces. They also require the most attention. Please read this section carefully before purchasing.
If you are particularly hard or rough on your jewelry, we do not recommend a charm ring or clip-on charm. We say this with love. People are often harder on their jewelry than they realize, and our charm pieces reward the ones who pause.
Heart Charm Rings
The heart on your ring is attached via a small loop. If that loop gets caught on something and is pulled, it can become compromised and the heart may detach. Common culprits: zippers, bag straps, keys, suitcase handles, dog leashes, tight pockets. Even putting your hand into a snug pocket with force can bend the heart over time.
Check your charm periodically. If you notice any looseness, send it back to us for tightening or visit a local jeweler for reinforcement. We would rather you catch it early than lose it.
Clip-On Charms
The beauty of clip-on charms is that you can move them between bracelets and necklaces. The thing to watch: the clip can open accidentally if caught in hair, tight clothing, or pulled chains. Make it a habit to check that the clip is secure after dressing and undressing. If you would prefer your charm soldered on like a pendant, we are happy to do that for you. Just reach out.
Cleaning
Clean your jewelry with warm water and a small amount of mild dish soap such as Dawn. Soak in a bowl for approximately 15 minutes, then gently pat dry with a soft cloth.
Caring for Your Gemstones
Not all stones are created equal. Here is what you need to know about the stones we work with at Dolce Amore Vault.
Diamonds, rubies, and sapphires are the most durable stones for everyday wear. Warm water, mild soap, and a soft brush keep them sparkling.
Emeralds need a gentler touch. Most emeralds are naturally fracture-filled with oils or resins, which is completely normal. Avoid ultrasonic cleaners, steam, and sudden temperature changes. Clean with warm soapy water and a very soft brush only. No harsh chemicals ever.
Aquamarine loves water but not heat or direct sunlight, which can cause fading over time. Clean gently with warm soapy water and keep it out of prolonged sun exposure.
Pink sapphires follow the same care as blue sapphires. Durable and beautiful. Warm soapy water is all they need.
Pearls are the most delicate stone we work with. Always the last thing you put on and the first thing you take off. Wipe with a soft damp cloth after wearing. Never spray perfume directly on pearls. Never soak them. Store flat in a soft pouch and avoid airtight containers.
Onyx and turquoise are both porous stones that can absorb chemicals, oils, and lotions and discolor permanently. Clean with a barely damp soft cloth only. No soaking, no chemicals, no ultrasonic cleaners. Keep them away from perfume and beauty products entirely.
Storage
Store pieces separately to avoid scratching. Harder stones like diamonds can scratch softer ones like turquoise and pearls. A soft lined jewelry box with individual compartments or small pouches for each piece is ideal. Keep your jewelry away from direct sunlight and extreme heat.
Professional Care & Repairs
Once a year, have your fine jewelry professionally cleaned and checked. A jeweler can inspect prongs, clasps, and settings for wear you might not notice, and address it before a stone loosens or a charm detaches. It's a small habit that goes a long way.
If something needs attention on a Dolce Amore Vault piece, reach out and show me what's going on. I'll assess what's needed and give you a quote. From there, you can decide whether you'd like to send it back for repair or take it to a local jeweler. Sometimes shipping alone costs more than the fix, and I'll always be upfront about that.
A Final Note
We take enormous pride in the craftsmanship of every Dolce Amore Vault piece. Each one is made to be treasured, worn, and eventually passed down. With a little care, your jewelry will go on to shine for generations.
